Field change orders must be managed through formal change control in CQM. When a field change arises, capture the new scope and the reason for the change, then update all affected documentation. This includes revising drawings and specifications to reflect the altered work, and adjusting the Quality Control Plan and the ITP so the inspection and testing requirements match the updated criteria. After implementing the change, reverify that the revised work meets the acceptance criteria, which may involve additional inspections, tests, or special QC checks. It’s essential to obtain the proper approvals, and to update schedules, costs, and as-built records accordingly. Keeping thorough records of the FCO, updated drawings, revised QC plan/ITP, and test results helps ensure the change is traceable and compliant.

Other approaches fall short because they bypass the formal control process and can create quality, safety, or contractual issues: ignoring scope changes risks unverified work and misaligned expectations; reassigning work to another contractor without approvals bypasses accountability and QC requirements; and issuing a new contract for field changes is unnecessary and disruptive, since changes should be integrated within the existing contract through proper change management.
